Hey. I had the exact same problem. You have to disable VoiceOver when you do 
the actual click. So go to the button, route with Vo-Command-F5, then disable 
VoiceOver with Vo-f5. Wait a moment, then hold down the option key and click on 
the lower left corner of the trackpad. Then release and reload VoiceOver and 
hopefully it will have worked. A little harrowing.
