I may be wrong but I think that you may be assuming that the Mac copies and 
pastes files in the same way as Windows. From my experience of only a month of 
using the  Mac it does not. This is what I do in column view.  highlight the 
app to be copied. I then navigate to the application folder but I do not open 
it. Whilst Voiceover is on the application Folder I press command V to paste 
onto  the folder. If I open the folder I will then find the app pasted in there.
