Hello Ioana, The only way I know of how to disable this feature is to put Mail into Classic view in the View tab of Mail Preferences, then to get rid of the Preview pane by bringing the mouse to the horizontal splitter that separates the headings from the message, and double clicking with the mouse or trackpad. This moves the splitter to the bottom of the window.
This is the way I read mail. You'll have a list of messages on the right, and a list of mailboxes on the left. The mailbox selected on the left controls the messages displayed on the right.
