Hello Jeff, You Wrote: All, I have purchased in installed VMWare 3.1.3, and purchased and downloaded Windows 7 Home Premium. I am struggling to figure out how to get VMWare to see and install Windows. The Microsoft download included a setup executable, and 2 .box files. I ran this on my PC, and got an 'Expanded Setup' folder, complete with .inf file and other standard CD looking files. However, VMWare appears to expect an image .dmg file, or a physical CD.
Answer: Jeff, First, Fusion is not expecting a .DMG file but, rather, a .ISO file if a DVD is not available. Second, check to see if a .ISO file was extracted, if it was, then you're home free. Third, without knowing the vendor from where you purchased your copy of Windows, I will assume that the executable file expanded all of the files you need to install Windows from a remote device such as a USB drive. If my assumption is correct, then all you need to do is create a .ISO file (disc image) of the files that were expanded when you ran the executable file. This can be done by using any number of free or paid third-party or Windows-included utilities. For example, in Windows 7, you can use Windows Media Center to create the necessary .ISO file. For earlier versions of Windows, like XP, I generally use Roxio CD Creator to either make or burn .ISO files to DVD. Please keep in mind that I am making an assumption that the extracted files you mentioned are all the files that are needed to install Windows. I am somewhat puzzled because it has been my experience that when one downloads a copy of Windows, the only extracted file from any executable source is a .ISO. Jeff, I know this can be frustrating but you will soon discover that the result is well worth the effort. Just remember that all Fusion is looking for is either a Windows 7 Install Disc or a .ISO file which is, effectively, the disc image of the install disc without the physical media. I would appreciate any guidance on how to make this work. Can I create a .dmg file from my Expanded Setup folder? Is there a simpler option?
