Answer: I can only speak for myself, of course. I have performed multiple clean installs and upgrade on my MacBook Pro. As yet, I have discovered no discernable difference between the two methods. For a newbie I generally recommend just upgrading to Lion; it's always good to have a backup before making any major system change also. To someone who has the time and energy, I would recommend that he first clone his current install of Snow Leopard, then, perform a clean install of Lion; finally, use the Migration utility to bring the old settings from Snow Leopard into Lion.
