Weird. And when you open the trash there is nothing in it? One way to figure out where space has gone is to open up the drive at the top level (Should have folders for Applications, Users, Library etc) and turn on calculate folder sizes which will churn for a while and total up how much is in each folder. You can turn this on in the Finder by going to View in the menu bar and then Show View Options which is also just Command-J. With the folder list window open View Options should have a checkbox that says "Calculate all sizes" Checking that box will make it start totaling things up. Then you can sort the size column to figure out which folder has the most stuff in it. After that you can open up that folder, turn on calculate there and continue hunting for where the space has gone. You might want to turn that stuff off when you're done so it doesn't beat on your hard drive when you open that window.

Normally you won't need to defrag the drive on OSX. Just to check the basics, did you empty the trash after you got rid of the virtual machine?

Okay, how do you defrag your hard drive? And what other tools can I use to get rid of things I'm not using and have already uninstalled? I am having an issue with my available space. I had over 700 gb avialble before I tried to install windows with vm fusion, realized that I did somethings wrong, and deleted the entire vm, but my available space didn't return to what it was before I installed the VM machine. How can I fix this?
