Hi Shawn,

You can set this in Energy Saver preferences in the System Preferences. I 
believe there's a setting there where you can put the Mac to sleep when the lid 
is closed and then set the time for the computer to go to sleep. You can set 
this to something longer than the standard five minutes.

No, it won't harm your Macbook, just drain the battery more quickly.
