I don't have my 5th generation anymore, but from my memory, Unfortunately I 
don't think there is with VoiceOver.  The batter icon is up in the tiny status 
bar at the top.  if you *could* (questionable) check the status it would be in 
settings, about, and come to think of it, voiceover doesn't read there either.
