Hi Alex,
What you might want to understand is that Bootcamp is, for all intents and
purposes, running Windows natively. All the Bootcamp Assistant does for you is
repartition your hard drive and install a boot manager so you can pick which
system you want to use at any given time, and then you literally install
Windows on that empty partition, like you would on a regular PC. The issue
with Bootcamp's installation is that it isn't automated. You could create an
unattended installation disk to handle that for you, but the process is not
trivial. VmWare has a method of automating things so you can just put your
WIndows CD in, type in your product key and twenty or twenty five minutes later
you have a working Windows system with sound and everything.
I've not done the Bootcamp thing myself, so others who have feel free to speak
to how it performs. My VmWare machine runs quite happily though, and I've not
noticed a speed drop. Admittedly, I'm not doing anything really intensive on
the VM, but on new hardware the speed degradation shouldn't be a problem for
most people. I think the accessibility issues with Bootcamp make VmWare a very
attractive solution.
Best,
Zack.
