I used outspoken in college, for the time, in some ways, it was actually more advanced than the windows screen readers were. I will mention what I remember. Like voiceover, you did a lot of navigation, and the mouse pointer was the outspoken cursor. So, there were commands for moving up, down, left and right, much like voiceover's keys. The difference was how much you would navigate at one time, moving left and right moved by words, moving up and down moved by lines or items, depending on the type of window you were in. You didn't interact with anything, and outspoken mainly used the numeric keypad for it's commands. For browsing the internet, netscape worked fairly well. Of course, back then no screen reader on any platform could gain access to the entire page at once, you navigated a screen at a time, and if you wanted to move by link, you could ask outspoken to search for underlined text, back then, the web was not as graphical, so this worked fairly well. For writing papers, I used macwrite, this was quite accessible, even the spell checker worked well because outspoken had a command to move to the highlighted word. I would say that voiceover is probably more powerful, but that's because applications have gotten more complex over the years, but again, for its time, outspoken was a good screen reader, and it definitely made the mac accessible.
