There was no conclusion. One reason is that the focus of this discussion isn't really clear.
Are you wanting to send and read email from inside a terminal, or do you want to set up your own mail server? Running your own email server is doable, but has lots of gotchas and a willingness to gain an understanding of SMTP. I also wouldn't use sendmail to run a personal mail server, it's unnecessarily complicated. I'd recommend exim, though there are others. Feel free to reply with questions...
