I'm not sure which option i used for the one i'm on, but you can either
manually set the airport or go through the assisted procedure which gives you
less flexibility over your options.

If you go through manual setup and on the toolbar go to internet, then go to
the wireless tab, you have the option to set your connectivity with either an
ethernet or via wifi, set up a new wifi network, extend your base wifi via
ethernet, and a third mode which goes something like DWS which probably stands
for distributed wireless station which i have never used before.

Your airport locking up could also mean that your firmware is still 7.4 and
should be upgraded to 7.5 which you can do if you are directly connected by
ethernet from your airport to your router. Once the airport is identified, you
get the automatic option to upgrade.

Try that first, then go through the ethernet connectivity as bridge process
again.

Hoe that helps
