Greetings Frank and others, I went into voiceOver utility -> navigation and unchecked:"automatically interact when using tab key". Now I can use the right and left arrowkeys to expand and contract threads respectivly, and since I retained my preview pane, the tab key usually causes VO to read the highlighted message.
