I use it here without a problem though I haven't tweaked any options at all as 
the defaults do me just fine!

You don't need to open Dropbox at all as it starts automatically, the Dropbox 
folder by default is located under your user folder on your hard drive, for 
example go into "Finder", and type command-n, new Window pops up and the 
dropbox folder is found in this folder.
