Hi Jane,

TextEdit works in two modes: plain text and rich text format. In order to
switch from the rich text format of the .rtf file, you need to use the shortcut
Command-Shift-T to make this plain text before saving as .txt, or else navigate
to the Format menu on the TextEdit menu bar and select the same option
associated with this shortcut. Command-Shift-T will also switch plain text
format to rich text.
