That was my suggestion a few days ago. It works for me quite fine.

Here the script again. Just save it as scpt and give it a shortcut in the 
keyboard commander:
tell application "Finder"
        open folder "Macintosh HD:User:YourUser:Downloads:"
end tell

Just replace "YourUser" with the user name of your home folder.
