correct,

You do have another option as well.  Since you were using the sync all feature, 
 You could go through your music library, interact with the songs table, and 
uncheck the songs you don't want so, you can free up space on your iPhone.  
Note: this will only work if you have your iPhone set to only sync checked 
media.  Its checked by default.
