First, Apple TV actually works unlike uverse. Also, when playing something you've recorded on Apple TV you don'tuse up your internet pipe like you do for each show you recall on uverse.
Since you only get 24 megabits or so it's best to offload as much from your connection as you can since ATT can't provide a very large or usable pipe.
