I have not read newer messages yet, but there are third party programs that 
will retrieve your entire llibrary from he i pod do NOT sync it with your mac 
and let i tunes erase it I don't have an I pod that cares, so I don't know the 
software's name but I do know it exists  in the windows world there is tune 
transfer
