Just to add to this, Make sure your router doesn't automatically start redistributing your net bios traffic.
User authentication is pretty useless if the ports are open so you want to make sure you have a router and the firewall options are set blocking traffic from the outside. John's comments are pretty on the money though. Just remember if you share it chances are it's available to the world unless you take steps to secure the data. Microsoft is known for being unsecure.
