The installation proces for MAX is a little bit different. The application comes in a zipped file containing 3 or 4 files. All .app files are important to have MAX working, but having all of them into Applications system folder make it a little bit chaotic. So, you may want to create a new folder for MAX files, copy them there and create an alias pointing to max.app into your applications folder.
