Hi Rafaela,

You need to be on the horizontal splitter, and you need to double click with
your VO cursor on the splitter.  I'll paste in part of one of my very old
archived list posts:

To remove the preview pane in the Mail application

1. Navigate (e.g. with VO-Right arrow) past the "Messages Table" to where you hear "Horizontal Splitter".
2. Route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor with VO-Command-F5
3. Double-click on the splitter either using VO-Shift-Space or by pressing your physical mouse key or trackpad key twice quickly. To double click with VO-Shift-Space, hold down your Control, Option, and Shift keys then tap the space bar twice quickly. You should also be able to double-click by quickly pressing the "5" key twice on a numeric keypad with Numpad Commander enabled (only in Leopard or Snow Leopard, not Tiger).

Anne has mentioned that using VO-Shift-Space doesn't always work as a substitute for clicking or double-clicking, while clicking with mouse or trackpad (or by using the Numpad Commander option) will work. This can true for some applications with transitioning accessibility, but I've always found it to work in commonly used applications like mail.

The two clicks must be close together. If you click once, the system expects that you will be issuing commands to move the splitter (e.g. by interacting with it and using your arrow keys). The second click tells it that you do not want to adjust it, but to drop it all the way. Note that you will never be able to do this if such an action hides an essential window that means you cannot effectively use the app. I can move splitters with double-click to remove informational windows in Automator; I can't remove any windows that are essential to my using the application.

Esther

Hi Teresa,
I put the mouse and the vo cursor on the vertical splitter, then tried a vo
shift space to clic the mouse. Nothing happened so I turned off trackpad
commander and clicked the actual mouse. Nothing happened either. What am I
missing? am I supposed to interact with it or do something else after?
thanks,

Hi, Rafaela,

Ensure that VO and the mouse pointer are on the horizontal splitter between the
list of messages and the preview pane. Use your actual mouse to double-click it.
