Hi,
I'd recommend you change this, because as voiceover users you will bie using 
the function keys often. Go to system prefs, keyboard, and there will be a 
checkbox to use the f1, f2 keys etc for standard functions or something like 
that. Check it, and the function keys will perform software actions now. To 
rase the volume or screen brightness now instead of only using the function 
keys use them with the fn key, so they perform hardware actions.
