Why not try DVD to AVI? This is a program that I use, not only does it make it smaller than a GIG, but it automatically removes the copy right protection. It's only 20 bucks, and well worth the dollar. Here's the link. http://www.leawo.com/
Look for the 1 that says DVD to AVI. It has a lot of other stuff, but this is the one I use. I have over 1200 movies, on a external hard drive that is a terabyte. And it works wonders. I was able to get rid of the DVD clutter in my house, and still keep my movies.
