When you've made a selection, left arrow alone goes to the beginning of the 
selection.  Right arrow alone goes to the end of the selection.

IF you want to set a marker at a certain place, just pause the playback and 
press the p key.  Now, move out to the spot where you want the selection to 
end.  Next, press command+y to move the insertion point to that spot.  Now, 
press command+left arrow to move the selection to the marker you added by 
pressing p.  That's all there is to it.
