IWork is accessible, but some of this will depend upon what you want to 
accomplish. I know others have had great success and have learned more than I 
have, so perhaps they can share their experiences. As far as the cost, it 
depends where you purchase your copy, but if you are a student, you can receive 
a discount of I believe 15%. Either way, iWorks is by far less expensive than 
Microsoft Office. :)
