Isaac1 here are some things to try:

On the keyboard, press contror-option-k for keyboard help. Press various 
Braille keys to hear what they do. Press escape to exit keyboard help.

When you are comfortable with this procedure, you can go into the utility 
manager with control-option-f8. In the list, go to Braille. Tab to the button 
that says Assign Braille Keys and press space. Inside that dialog, there's a 
table with Braille assignments that you can review. When you're done, use the 
VO cursor to go to the Done button and press it, then go to the Close button 
and activate it.

This should start you on your way.
