What I'm using is Macvim, which is great if you're not afraid to do some 
learning first. Another alternative would be subethaEdit or Fraise, which seems 
to be a successor to smultron.

With python in particular, you want to be sure that the editor has good indent 
support, and if possible knows about python and can autoindent for you.
