Hello Mark, The ding sound you heard was because of the conflict with Hotspots. You were trying to describe the item at Hotspot 8 which was not set.
This is what I meant about the conflict. If you want to use VoiceOver and to be able to toggle between black on white and white on black, you need to change the shortcut in System Preferences.
