I have a few tips which might help a bit:

You can just hit "M" to place a marker and avoid the marker dialog this way.
In the settings, you can select a checkbox which will play the audio you have 
selected when you press the spacebar. This checkbox isn't selected by default.

If I only have to select a few seconds of audio, I find it much easier to use 
shift and the left and right arrow keys. You can then move the left edge of the 
selection by pressing a an s, and the right edge of the selection by pressing d 
and f.

I'm currently  trying to understand how multitracking works.
