Hi Carolyn,
yes , there is a way to do that.
In voiceover , there is a script that tells you the time when you want to hear 
it.
You need to activate the keyboard commander in the voiceover menu and chose the 
left or right option-key.
Depending on which choice you have made, you press the chosen option-key with 
the letter s.
