I believe there is a GMail setting that effects how the delete in iMap works. Right now, I have my gmail set up so that only once the email has been deleted from all iMap folders will it get deleted on the gMail server. This worked great when I had all my emails in one folder, but I recently changed things around, and have copies of some items in a specific lable / folder and also in the Inbox.
I will probably review the settings of GMail and look at what moving items into the "Google Mail/bin" folder would do since I believe this acts the same way as the "delete" button on the web interface. I would probably move to almost 100% using the Plain HTML web interface if there I could get gMail to go either to the next or previous thread once I had hit archive or delete on the thread of messages I was currently reading.
