Hi Chad, In the future, please be more specific when asking questions, or it is very difficult to help you. Helpful information would be how you came to have the character viewer in the first place, whether it shows up permanently in an application such as Text Edit, or if you press something to make it appear.
I will try to do my best, though. In a document or other text entry field, you can hit Command-Option-T to display the "Character Viewer" or, as the table calls itself, "Character Pallet". When this is in the foreground, you can choose from a table which character to insert, and the toolbar can assist you to choose a category. You can also add characters from various categories to your "favorites" to make it more efficient if you quickly need access to characters from a huge list of categories, without having to switch between the categories. These are separated by tabs. One tab contains your favorites, and the other tab enables you to select by category. To disable Character Viewer, do the following: 1. Open up System Preferences<Language and text, and click the "Input Sources" tab. 2. Vo-Right to the "Input Menu" table. 3. Check the checkbox for the "Keyboard and character viewer" options. This should get rid of it. You can still see the menu options in edit, though, as well as use the command which seems strange. Also, to close it, you can navigate all the way to your left and hit the "Close" button. When you use Command-Option-T or the "Special CHaracters" menu item in "Edit", you will also still see it. That doesn't really make sense to me, but that's how you're supposed to disable and enable it. Also, if you go into "Keyboard" preferences and select the "Keyboard" tab, you will see a checkbox that says "Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in menu bar" though even if you uncheck this, it will not disappear from the menu. That seems kind of weird, but at least you can close it.
