Every time you hit Command-Up to go to parent folder, you’ll open a new Finder 
window. Try instead to use the list view itself, collapsing any disclosed 
folders you no longer need. This keeps you in the same window or tab.

And you can kill all windows at once with Command-Option-W, if you get 
overwhelmed.
