Hello, Many thanks for the replies on this. First my iMac is the 2017 model not 1997 as in my mail! My problem is that I sometimes unknowingly hit FN F10 which mutes all sound both VoiceOver and Media. Having done this I have problems finding F10 to toggle mute back on. I will follow up on the suggestion to add a tactile dot on F10. I thought that the 3 finger double tap on the iPhone also muted all sound both VO and Media. I now know that it only mutes VO. It is possible to set VO volume to 0 using Shift+Control+Options+Command to change VO settings and arrowing right to select Volume and then arrowing down to set it to 0.It is unlikely that you would do this by accident. As a test I did the above to set VO volume to 0 and then shutdown VO and restarted VO by Command+F5. Restarting VO left VO volume at 0. Rebooting the iMac let me start VO at sensible volume to enter my login password and then VO reverted to volume 0. So if VO volume is somehow set to 0 there is no simple way to reset it to a sensible value. However that was not my problem and it is unlikely that you would accidentally set VO volume to 0.
