This is not your Mac, but is Google. Google makes it a bit difficult to delete e-mail items, instead it loves archive them. THis means they are in the "All Mail" folder but not in any specific folder. You have to be careful with the "All Mail" folder since it literally is all of your mail including inbox and filed in folder messages.
To verify that archiving is happening for your Gmail account on your phone: 1. Open the settings app 2. Swipe down to the bottom and click apps 3. Find and click the mail app 4. Click the Mail accounts button 5. Click the account you are interested in 6. Click the Account Settings button below the list of services available for the account 7. Click advanced 8 In this screen you can select if the delete button archives or trashes your eMail.
