Andrew,

I have been using an external USB drive on a USB hub for years and years and
more years than I can count. It all just works. You get a new drive, connected
to your USB hub, connect that to your Mac, and away you go.

You want a NAS? Synology makes a lot of really good and reasonably accessible
ones, from the small – 2 to 4 bays – to the ridiculous – eight bays. How much
storage do you want? I have 96 TB, which, after turning on RAID6, gives me 64
TB. I am ecstatic about how much storage I have. I will never run out. I can
keep backups for almost ever! How big is big enough? Only you know.
