The boot chime should have been available on your M2 MacBook Air. You must have
had it turned off.

Hi,

This a brief progress report in case it's of interest or use to anyone!

My M4 arrived Wednesday evening. I began a migration from my current M2
Macbook on Thursday.

One initial big and delightful surprise: The boot chime is back. By
default turning on my new machine for the first time gave me the olde
familiar boot chime. yeh!

I got Voice Over by waiting long enough, our long established
expectation. It's still there, too.

Setting up wifi is next, and that goes smoothly, too. However, it's at
this point that I'm expecting to see the alternative to transfer over a
cable, but I'm not seeing it even though I've attached a cable
connecting both machines.

So that's my first disappointment. I tried a few different ports,
different cables well known to work even this past week between my M2
and other machines, all with no joy. So be it. I can live with a wifi
transfer.

Migration Assistance setup on both machines goes smoothly. A few rounds
of authentication ending with validating a 6 digit confirmation code
displaying on both succeeds and I move to the next screen.

At this point I run into my next disappointment. I see four checkboxes
for four categories of content that might, or not be migrated. However,
Migration Assistant isn't paying attention to the checkbox state at this
point. It's very slowly calculating total transfer size of content in
each category. Only once calculations are complete does it pay any
attention to not transfering the 1.5Tb of personal files as opposed to
the 200Gb of Applications, "Other fies and Folders," and System and
Network files.

This strikes me as inefficient and quaint as it should be clear from the
start that a new 512Gb SSD won't hold the old 2Tb of data, but whatever.
Let's go forward--it's only a time suck, right?

Well, maybe not. I was surprised to hear the boot chime from my new M4
while I was otherwise engaged on a Zoom call a few hours later. What on
earth? I couldn't figure it out--no VoiceOver response. I had to reboot
the M4 and start the above all over again.

I started writing this message when the count of my personal files under
the unchecked checkbox was at 50Gb. It's now up to 125Gb. Woo-hoo. It'll
have to get to 1.5Tb before moving forward. Frustrating.
