The operating system updates typically run for at least seven years these days, and some older operating system releases receive security fixes for a while thereafter. I bought a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro back in 2021. If Apple continues to support the operating system as it has done in the past, I wouldn't expect to consider an upgrade until at least 2028. Of course, you may well have other reasons for wanting a new desktop machine. I'm not suggesting otherwise.
