You say you attempted to run the installer, which doesn’t make any sense.
The download should be a DMG. This is not an installer that is run. Rather,
it is a disk image that when opened places a volume on your desktop.
When the volume is opened, you copy the application file from the volume, and
paste it into the Applications folder.
Once the Dropbox.app file is in the Applications folder, you then open the
application.
Like Herbie said, you can use the Shortcut menu to open the application file
with admin privileges.
Once the Dropbox application is running, it should appear in the Status menu
(formerly Menu Extras).
If you don’t find Dropbox in the Status menu, then it is not running on your
Mac.

Here is a description of the problem, one I downloaded the application from the
official dropbox page. Two I attempted to run the install program which of
course requires me to give clarence. Three of course I'm reminded that it is an
application downloaded from the Internet. After clearing the installation to
proceed the program starts and tells me it's downloading. I get the message
"content is empty" then it tells me it's installing. After I think it is
finished I attempt to launch the program. Again I get the message content is
empty. Next I go into the applications folder to attempt to run the software
from where it said it was installed. In this case of Applications folder.
course the applications folder.
