Hello All, As I have been asked about the settings I use with the workout app on my Apple watch several times, recently, I thought I would post the settings I use, here.
NOTE 1: I am going to assume that you are a VoiceOver user who is familiar with the basic functions of the Apple watch, the Watch App, and iOS, in general. NOTE 2: During workouts, I have my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and my iPhone 14 paired with an OpenFit, by Shock, Bluetooth headset. NOTE 3. I have several workout music playlists actually downloaded to my Watch. I use music that is 128 to 132 beats per minute. Having the music downloaded to the watch provides for a better workout experience when changing songs, on the fly. NOTE 4: I have created two customized workouts, one for jogging outside, and one for use with my walking pad, as an indoor walking workout. I am going to focus on the indoor walking workout in this post. As an F Y I, I average about 5 miles per hour when jogging outside and about 4.8 miles per hour on the walking pad. My workouts generally last from between 70 to 90 minutes. My workouts are based on time goals. For example, a 30 minute indoor walk. NOTE 5: To be clear, once I start a workout, I use only VoiceOver and Siri to control the Apple watch. NOTE 6: I have a Fitness Focus link ed to the workout app so that once I start a workout, the Fitness Focus is automatically initiated. This is so I am not interrupted by unwanted notifications and / or phone calls during a workout. When the workout ends, the Focus is automatically disabled. NOTE 7: While the following steps describe the configuration of my Ultra 2, they should work on any Apple watch; however the resulting VoiceOver feedback will vary depending upon the watch and its OS version. NOTE 8: Finally, if you are new to workouts, I strongly suggest that you start at a slow, comfortable pace that will not tax your physical endurance. 1. Because of the lag time of VoiceOver feedback, on my previous watch models, I set the watch face to Activity Digital, as a backup in case the Workout app did not respond fast enough. On the Ultra 2, the workout app and VoiceOver work together seamlessly so there is not really any reason to use this particular watch face during a workout. For me, it’s just a habit. 2. Configure the workout app to automatically launch a Playlist. This selection will remain the same until you change it. 3. Set the Action button to launch the Workout app. In the Display and Brightness area: 4. Select, Always On. 5. Set both Wake on Wrist Raise and Wake on Crown Rotation, to ON. 6. Set wake duration to 70-seconds. In the Siri area: 7. Select Listen for Siri or Hay Siri. 8. Set both Raise to speak and Press Digital Crown to, ON. These are the settings I find to be most efficient during a cardio workout. When your ready to start your workout: 1. Press the Action button on your Ultra 2. The workout will begin along with your selected music Playlist. 2. During the workout, slowly rotate the digital crown to Have VoiceOver read your various workout matrix. 3. My favorite Matrix is the elapsed time and, near the top of the display, the percentage of your completed workout. Note that you may leave VoiceOver Focus on the top Matrix and VoiceOver will automatically report each time the percentage of the completed workout changes. You can quickly silence VoiceOver feedback by placing your palm on top of the watch. 4. During your workout, You can tell Siri to change songs, set the song playback mode to repeat, and to pause or end your workout. There are a great many more things you can do with Siri and the watch during a workout but I’ll let you discover them for yourself. I am absolutely delighted with Voiceover feedback during workouts on the Ultra 2. If you know of any tips and tricks that will help us improve our workouts, please reply and let us know.
