I’m not sure this is true. I have both a Linksys Velop router, that has a USB-A port that will support an external USB drive and an AT&T Internet Gateway that also has a USB-A port that will support an external drive.

T that’s supported external drives. These are hard to find these days. Generally you need a network attached storage or NAS to do this. Sonoligy is one of the big names and doing this, but they are fairly expensive too. You might have better luck getting an inexpensive Linux box and running it as an NFS server.
