Hello, I will opine here that it would be very strange if a homepod did not connect to hotspot. I was able to connect my Echo dot to personal hotspot so I don't see why a homepod would not be able to connect in this manner. One could also make their computer a wifi access point and connect devices to it if the homepod does not accept the hotspot connection itself but I think at this point you may want to consider calling Apple support to check that this information is accurate.
