Just curious, is column layout different from column view? I use
list view in Finder. I may try column layout in Mail. Any tips you can
offer? Thanks.

I actually like this behavior myself. If you want to change it, with
mail opened up, press command plus comma to open up mail preferences.
Once the preferences payne is opened, Vo left arrow to the toolbar.
Interact with the toolbar and move to the view option. The very first
option in this section says something like line preview. Activate this
popup box and change the selection to none. This should do what you are
wanting to do.
