Not necessarily. Apps will only update automatically if you have enabled this feature in your Mac’s AppStore settings. If this is not the case, you should go to the Apple menu in the Menu Bar, and arrow down to AppStore, and press enter. If you have updates pending, this should take you to the Update section of the AppStore application, where you should find a listing of pending updates.
