Wow, this is compicated to explain. The vo:j command jumps between major areas of a window. In mail if you have both the messages panel and maibboxes panel open, it skips one of the panels, and just jumps between toolbar, mailboxes and message list. So, you can close the, mailboxes panel, or create a hotspot for the message panel.
