Hi, Donna: This is a brief follow up to my cautionary tale. I'm pleased to report that things have settled back to normal on my Mac Mini running Ventura. I've no idea why the strange behavior. I could speculate that some of the last steps of updating might occur when you launch a particular application for the first time under the new environment. For me that would explain what I was seeing yesterday and why things are back to usual today.
Still, I think the moral of the story is the same. Don't do it on a business day when you've no time for surprises. Perhaps look for a couple of relatively free days like a weekend, or perhaps the upcoming Thanksgiving holliday (if you're in the U.S.). PS: I also got speech back on my misbehaving Airbook. I figured out to launch terminal and start some music playing, which I can do without speech from a terminal window. Thereafter the three-finger double tap works as expected. Go figure!
