That was precisely what I had done last week, but it hasn’t seemed to improve 
file access performance.  A friend suggested that I might want to install 
firmware memory rather continue using the 1gB hard disk, he had mentioned that 
it significantly improved performance on his Mac.

I’m open to any suggestions.

I should explain that there are times when programs (i.e., e-mail) does not 
respond for an unacceptable time.
