Hello Tim,
Many thanks for your info on this. However I still have problems…

First I had to simplify my time machine setup. I have 2 time machine disks
which save alternate backups. One of these time machine disks contains 2
partitions one for my Mac and the other for my wife’s Mac. To get anything to
work I had to eject disks until I had just a single time machine disk for my
Mac.

I was then able to see time machine controls which showed the latest backup and
had the previous button you mentioned and the vertical slider. Alas pressing
the previous button took me to my first ever backup which was in April 2020! If
I then press the next button I did indeed get to the next backup which was
still in April 2020 and I needed a lot of presses of the next button to get to
11 February 2022 and in the process missed the backup which contained the file
I wanted to restore.
Is there a way to access the vertical slider using VO?

When / If I eventually locate the backup for late Friday 11 February 2022 then
how do I find the 1 file in that backup which I want to restore and thereby
replace the current version of that file on my Mac hard disk.

I am still unclear as to how my prior technique might corrupt the backup disk.
All I was doing was to copy the desired file from the backup disk to replace
its current version on my Mac hard disk. I did not change anything on the
backup disk.

Many thanks in anticipation of clarification. Is the action of the previous
button taking me back to my first ever time machine backup a bug which should
be reported to Apple?

Best … Paul Hopewell
