Hi,

To clarify, backups are not a method by which various services are synced.  
Backups are just what they claim to be, a backup of your device.  By far, the 
best, and most efficient method of syncing is what both Dave and Brad 
mentioned.  By syncing various services such as Contacts, Safari, Mail etc 
through your Apple ID, you make it so that the same data is available on all 
your devices using the Same Apple ID and with these same services set to sync.  
Of course, for those who do not have reliable data network services, there is 
still the ability to sync manually using the Finder while your device is 
connected via USB, or wirelessly if you’ve configured it.

Nothing is “automatic” unless you configure it to be.
